Popular Darwinism in Twentieth-Century Britain
8. Mai 2014
Lecture
Peter Bowler’s lecture focuses on the reception of Darwinist thought in the general public in Great Britain with some comparative side-glances at the situation in the USA since the early twentieth century. His analysis shows that the popular media were quite slow to pick up the revival of Darwinism resulting from the synthesis with genetics in the 1920s and 30s.
The lecture is an introductory part of a workshop with Peter Bowler on the following day (Fri, 9 May 2014) that is devoted to his recent book “Darwin Deleted: Imagining a World without Darwin” (Chicago 2013) and it is organized by the DFG research unit “What If”.
Peter J. Bowler is professor emeritus of the history of science at Queen’s University, Belfast.
